Easter in Maastricht

Maastricht

Easter Monday is a national holiday here, so we thought it was the perfect excuse to travel to the Southern most part of the Netherlands to a city called Maastricht. Its is the oldest city in the Netherlands and has had an unbroken chain of habitation since Roman times.

On the River Maas

Maastricht felt completely different than the rest of the Netherlands. Being so close to Belgium and historically having been in the hands of many different countries all contribute to it probably being the least "Dutch City." Least Dutch in that the architecture is completely different, the locals are super friendly and they are passionate about their cuisine.

Maastricht is known around the world as a mecca for food snobs. So we enjoyed some amazing meals eating the local specialties like lamb.

Vrijthof - the best-known square in the city.

Brent and I were just talking about this trip recently and he said that sitting outside at this particular cafe next to the River was one of his favorite memories.

In additional to all the wining and dining, we poked around some museums and several churches as well.
Gothic church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist with a distinctive tower and a Romanesque church of Saint Servatius on the right.

The Basilica of Saint Servatius, is the oldest church in the Netherlands dating back to the 6th Century.

It was a beautiful city and provided us with another side to this unique country we call home.
